Trusts are cowering as GPs take on commissioning powers

One of our local GPs has ended up with a lead position on our clinical commissioning group. He’s a wily character, been a GP a long time and usually cuts through mist to the truth pretty easily.

What if the Health Bill falls at the final hurdle

Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Concentrate on the breath entering your body and as it flows out imagine the Health Bill being voted out of Parliament. What would you do? Have a party? Celebrate by seeing some patients? Read more »

What happens when you say no to the NHS wise men?

It is a very serious question that’s been taxing my brain this week.

A friend of mine is a clinical commissioning group (CCG) chair in a different region (yes truly, it is a friend, this isn’t one of those ‘condoms for a friend’ issues). Anyhow, he’s been very brave/stupid, by saying no.

When two NHS tribes go to war

I was talking to a cardiologist this week. We’ve got lots of them in our neck of the woods.

There is talk of a merger between the units because apparently it would produce ‘efficiencies’. My colleague was vehemently opposed to it.

The seas of commissioning

I met with our GPCC/CCG/CCC chairs this week. They are both very smart, experienced GPs who have steered their crafts through uncharted waters. Apparently the map they should be using is due out ‘at the end of the month’. He has a wide range of experience having only ever worked in the NHS since leaving school, but having worked in hospitals, primary and community care, and been present through locality purchasing groups, PCGs and PCTs.

Andrew Lansley – my part in his downfall

Okay, here’s the deal, I’ll let you into a secret if you promise not to tell.

The thing is, my source has said that the listening exercise that Steve Field is running was just a scam to get us through the local elections.

So what will happen to your data when PCTs depart?

In the week that sees the end of Osama, the Black Tower is
still struggling with ORSA.

No, ORSA is not Osama’s cousin but is actually the son of AQMAR, an assurance
tool designed to help the SHA accept that the PCTs are on target with
revalidation.

Regime change has left the Black Tower eerily quiet

It’s been a fascinating week at the Black Tower
while the schools are off.

The few remaining skeletal staff are huddling around the
photocopier to keep warm. Senior colleagues are getting news that they have
been given interview dates for jobs that are not real jobs, in organisations
that are not real organisations.
