More puppeteers to pull CCG strings

So last week I told you the NHS was safe, the next day CCGs were told that they would be given some staff without choice, then on Friday we find out that the number crunching and back office function is “Good Old SBS” although nobody calls them that obviously. Read more »

An escape plan is hatched… but not everyone escapes

Lightning once again split the sky, illuminating the two huddled figures sheltering in the rock face.
“Will they follow us if we lose this next battle?” the smaller one asked frantically.
“No, I fear all is lost if we can not take this battle, we must win at all costs” came the reply.
“But our plan is already in tatters, we will lose a great many people.” Read more »

Can you feel a revolution in the air?

I know this may sound odd coming from an ex-PCT medical director but I’m fortunate enough to count our local LMC chairs amongst my circle of friends.

What happens when you say no to the NHS wise men?

It is a very serious question that’s been taxing my brain this week.

A friend of mine is a clinical commissioning group (CCG) chair in a different region (yes truly, it is a friend, this isn’t one of those ‘condoms for a friend’ issues). Anyhow, he’s been very brave/stupid, by saying no.

Hello darkness, my old friend

I had some stuff to do in the office on Friday, mostly just finishing off things before heading off on a course on Monday. It was just past five when I looked up from the desk, packed my bag and headed out of the office. I thought I had better just wish the folks in the office a good weekend.

tool designed to help the SHA accept that the PCTs are on target with
revalidation.

Regime change has left the Black Tower eerily quiet

It’s been a fascinating week at the Black Tower
while the schools are off.

The few remaining skeletal staff are huddling around the
photocopier to keep warm. Senior colleagues are getting news that they have
been given interview dates for jobs that are not real jobs, in organisations
that are not real organisations.

How much do GPs know about the NHS reforms?

This week I was pretending to be a proper GP and attended a
meeting about finances. It was fascinating to meet other regular GPs from
beyond the realm of the Black
Tower.

Wait and GMC

I’ve been reading this week. It’s a bit of a surprise given
how much else there is to do in the rapidly shrinking Black Tower
- but those nice people at GMC are looking for comments. They’ve released a
consultation draft document entitled Good Management Practice: Guidance
for all doctors.
I’m afraid this is a must-read. It’s not long but each page is weighted down by
words that will trap the unwary and punish anyone who tries to take the short
cut through employment law and governance.
